Photograper Captures A Once-In-A-Lifetime Shot Of A ‘Horizontal Rainbow’ That Filled The Whole Sky

What Are Fire Rainbows? Discover the Science Behind This Stunning Phenomenon

Despite their name, fire rainbows are neither rainbows nor related to fire. Scientifically known as circumhorizontal arcs, these captivating optical phenomena occur when the sun is positioned at least 58 degrees above the horizon. Another key condition for their appearance is the presence of cirrus clouds—high-altitude, wispy clouds made of hexagonal ice crystals due to the low temperatures at such elevations.

When these ice crystals are perfectly aligned, they act like prisms, refracting sunlight in a way that produces a vibrant, rainbow-like effect across the sky.

Although many people believe fire rainbows are rare, their occurrence actually depends on geographic location, particularly latitude. In the United States, especially in regions like California, these arcs can be seen several times each summer. However, they are far less common in mid-latitude and northern European regions. For instance, the likelihood of witnessing a fire rainbow in Los Angeles is 5 to 10 times greater than in London.

Recently, photographer Cessna Kutz captured a breathtaking image of a fire rainbow over Lake Sammamish. Sharing the moment on Instagram, Cessna wrote:

“Witnessed a pretty cool phenomenon out on Lake Sammamish today. A horizontal rainbow! To me, it was a little reminder to hold onto hope and love instead of fear and panic in these unknown times. Stay safe out there, friends.”

Cessna’s photo quickly went viral, resonating with viewers around the world. Speaking to the media, she shared:

“I honestly had no idea these photos would make the news. I just wanted to share a beautiful moment I witnessed. Photography is a deep passion of mine, and I’m grateful that God has used my photos to touch people—not only across the nation, but globally. It’s been amazing to see it boost my business while making a positive impact on others.”

This beautiful phenomenon serves as a reminder of the wonders of nature—and the inspiration it can bring in uncertain times.
